Who are we?

Mary Davis

At eighty-three, I am the oldest member of our writing group. On my better days, I still feel twenty-three. Looking back over a long life with many difficulties, I would say it has often been like the Curate's Egg, good in parts. To be honest, it has been full of interest (and still is) I have always found great enjoyment in life's simple pleasures, and I hope there is still more to come.

Patricia Mary Emery

An affiliated member living in Hampshire. I have had poems published in four anthologies. I have won a short story competition in a local newspaper and my account of delivering Christmas mail was published in My Weekly. A gifted milliner. I once made hats for Harrods.

Janet Haworth

I am a founder member and current chairperson of Llandudno and District Writers Club. I came to live in Llandudno in 2003 having taken partial early retirement from teaching. On Valentines Day this year, I took over a small guesthouse with my partner. In my spare time, I like to write short stories and sometimes poems.

Veronica M Hughes

I am a founder member and started writing in my retirement for something to do. I have attended various writing classes and written three novels as yet unpublished. I was born in the Nilgiri Hills, in India where my father was in the British Army. I am a past president of Conwy and District Soroptomists International.

Hilda Jackson

I am only seventy-four years young. From council house to castle, by chance rather than design, with many trades along the journey. I have designed and written two guidebooks. Presently I am renovating an ancient cottage in the countryside. Retirement is not an option I have ever considered.

Brian Lux

I am retired dentist who became hooked on writing after having four children's stories published in a national newspaper. I have had several short stories published in small press magazines and the true animal stories in dog/cat magazines. I have had a few articles published in major UK dental journals including a monthly column now in its sixteenth year. A love of sailing inspired a series of articles on yachting. My main interest is children's fiction. For last three years, I have achieved the short list in the Winchester Writers 'Conference. I have everything crossed at present while a major publisher peruses my latest manuscript for a book. I am a member of the Society of Authors.

Max Makin

A Lancastrian now resident in North Wales for twenty years. I was a teacher for twenty-five years.... I have had articles and short stories published in the small press magazines. I have also won some writing competitions. My interests are my family, the two Rs, natural history and jazz.

Ken Oakley

I was born in 1935 to working class parents. I was brought up in a two up and two down terraced house with no bathroom and an outside toilet. After attending the local primary school, I won a place at a grammar school but left without any qualifications. I worked for a short spell in an office at a local cotton mill before joining the sales force of multiple furnishers. I enrolled on a nursing course and became a psychiatric nurse. I married twice and have two children. I began writing late in life but have achieved success in the local Ottakers poetry competition.

Barbara Maxwell
